"Harleys Breakdown"
                       (perkins/mabry)

My Uncle Harley Perkins was the first man I ever saw with a banjo.....
Even as a very young boy I remember being entranced by the sounds he was
getting out of his banjo- I even went to school and told about it during
one of those  'show and tell'  things...He and my Aunt Wanda lived a fair distance
away from us, so we didn't get to see them as often as I'd have liked to- but we
always had the best time at their house. My Mother and Aunt Wanda would cook and visit
while my Dad and Uncle Harley would take me out hunting or shooting skeets or looking for
arrowheads...Then after we had a meal, he'd get the banjo out and maybe Aunt Wanda
would get her accordion out and they'd play for us...I remember watching
President Richard Nixon give his resignation speech on their television set.
I also remember when Uncle Harley got a phonograph player that played 33 rpm records.
The first record I heard played on it was the Flatt and Scruggs classic "Foggy Mountain Banjo"....
The sound  coming out of those speakers was unbelievable.  30 yrs later- I still have that same reaction
to "that sound"..."Harleys Breakdown" is a tribute and big thanks to people like my  Uncle Harley, and Wade Garrett,
and Banks Patterson, and Curt Ballard,  and of course to Earl Scruggs for the wondrous music they've shared with us...
I can't  imagine what life would be without them...
