" I took my new air mattress back to Walmart today
to cover all these bouncing checks that I just can't pay
I been working overtime to pay the Devils dues
and all I got to show are these "Carthusian Blues"........
My dreamcatcher's a cigar a demon's puffin' on the end
he only sends me bad luck, but he swears that he's my friend
he took my favorite bull and turned him into bullion cubes
and all he left me with is these "Carthusian Blues"....
lawd I loved that woman gave her all that I had
she loved me just a little while but now she says I'm bad
it aint so bad she left me but she took that sweet chartreuse
and all she left me with are these "Carthusian Blues"....
a record's playin' in my head I wanted you to hear!!
that cigar chompin' colonel swore he was all for my career
I let him have our record all I get from him's bad news
and a steady dose of them "Carthusian Blues"....
they say Santa Clause has been here and he was loaded down with toys
he spent the night delivering to all good girls and boys
I only got a plaque that read "This Boy Here's Born To Lose"
and a festive dose of those "Carthusian Blues"...
Now there's too much air in my nicotine system
and too much blood in my alcohol supply
I can see the light in the dark days I'd been dreadin'
I been resurrected and I didn't even die...
Smokes comin' out of both chimneys at my house
and my dog and the cat await me there
folks think I flipped my lid or that I'm just a bad example
I'm just glad to know that someone cares!!!
Cause I've had them blues....
payin devils dues, my bull's just bullion cubes, all I'm gettin' is bad news
and I lost my sweet chartreuse all I got is the "Carthusian Blues"
Not much to add; the song pretty much speaks for itself. It's a true story that began writing itself while I was on my way to Walmart to take back a brand new air mattress because if I didn't I was going to have some checks bouncing..I think I wound up having a bunch of them bounce anyway...
Some of those old habits can make a person loose sight of whatever business sense they might
have and get "messed up as a crackheads checkbook...."
Numerous times I have been asked by people that have heard this song to elaborate on just what a "Carthusian" is. Here's the best I can do on that one right now;
A friend and I had gone to visit Thomas Jeffersons "Octagonal House" in Virginia. Durng the guided portion of the tour we came to the dining room, where the table was set with very real looking dishes, and the guide began identifying each dish, telling us what part of the world the dish originated from, and what it was made of. One of the dishes was called 'Chartreuse', and another was called 'Carthusian'...for some reason these two words stuck with me. On the way back home, my friend asked for part of a snack i had-and I told her that she "wasn't going to get none of my Carthusian unless she gave me some of her Chartreuse"..
So what is a 'Carthusian'?? I'm not really sure, but it seems like everybody's got one..
Tony Harrell played the keyboards, Chris Sharp played guitar,
David Long played the mandolin, Chuck Turner played drums,
Bob Moore played bass, and I played the banjo
